MyKomuter50 RM50 Pass: What It Means for Homes Near KTM Komuter Stations (2026)

Quick answer

Budget 2027 introduced MyKomuter50, a pass giving 30 days of unlimited KTM Komuter rides for RM50. Transport Minister Anthony Loke says it is targeted for 1 December 2026, or 1 January 2027 at the latest, and only a MyKad is needed. A daily Tanjung Malim–KL commuter could save about RM366 a month. Prasarana’s My50 pass for LRT, MRT and Rapid KL buses also continues. For home buyers, cheaper rail commuting strengthens the case for homes within walking distance of a Komuter station, especially in suburban Selangor, but train frequency and reliability still matter more than the fare.

What MyKomuter50 is

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim announced the pass in the Budget 2027 speech on 9 October. On 12 October, Loke gave more detail:

  • Price: RM50 for 30 days of unlimited KTM Komuter travel.
  • Eligibility: Malaysian citizens; a MyKad is all that is required.
  • Timing: targeted for 1 December 2026, otherwise 1 January 2027.
  • Ticketing: KTMB is still working out the mechanism, with a digital option preferred and no lengthy registration.
  • Users: about 40,000 commuters are expected to benefit.

It answers long-standing requests for a KTM version of Prasarana’s My50. Earlier attempts stalled because KTM routes are longer and fares higher; Finance Ministry approval has now moved it forward.

How much commuters could save

Loke gave these monthly examples, based on regular commuting:

RouteEstimated monthly saving
Tanjung Malim – Kuala LumpurAbout RM366 (from RM416 for 40 trips to RM50)
Seremban – Kuala LumpurAt least RM300
Alor Setar – ButterworthUp to RM250
Kluang – Johor Bahru (Shuttle Selatan)More than RM200

Over a year, RM366 a month adds up to about RM4,392. Shorter Klang Valley trips, such as Shah Alam to KL Sentral, will save less, but the cost becomes fixed and predictable.

My50 stays, and more trains are coming

Budget 2027 also keeps the My50 pass (RM50 for 30 days on Prasarana’s LRT, MRT, Monorail, BRT and Rapid KL buses), used by about 300,000 riders. Other rail measures include more than RM3.4 billion for Prasarana’s rail repairs and 42 new train sets for ETS and KTM Komuter. Loke said Klang Valley Komuter frequency will rise gradually as track upgrading works finish.

It has not been confirmed whether one pass will cover a trip that combines KTM and Prasarana lines. If your commute needs both, budget for two passes until KTMB says otherwise.

Why it matters for home buyers

Most buyers judge affordability by the instalment. But transport is a big monthly cost in suburban Selangor, and a fixed RM50 rail pass makes car-light living more realistic. That helps three groups:

  • First-time buyers who can afford a suburban home but not a second car.
  • Investors renting to students and young workers, who value cheap, predictable commutes.
  • Families where one partner works in KL and the other locally.

The benefit goes mainly to homes you can actually walk from. A station 3 km away still needs a car or feeder bus. Our Shah Alam commute times guide compares car and rail journeys.

How I would check a “near KTM” home

  1. Walk it yourself. Time the route from the lobby to the platform, including crossings and shade.
  2. Check peak frequency. A cheap pass helps little if trains are infrequent at 7.30am. Compare options in our LRT3 vs KTM Komuter guide.
  3. Map your full journey. Count transfers to your office, not just the first station.
  4. Work out the real monthly cost. Instalment, maintenance, utilities and transport together. See the real monthly cost of a Shah Alam condo.
  5. Do not overpay for “transit” marketing. Compare prices with similar homes a little further away.

💡 My practical view: a RM50 pass will not change property prices overnight. What it does is lower the cost of living near the line, which supports rental demand over time. Buy a home that works on its own merits, and treat cheaper commuting as a bonus. For a full area picture, read our Padang Jawa neighbourhood guide.

Frequently asked questions

When does the MyKomuter50 pass start?
Transport Minister Anthony Loke said the target is 1 December 2026, or 1 January 2027 at the latest. KTMB is still finalising how the pass will be sold, with a digital option preferred.
Who can buy MyKomuter50?
Malaysian citizens. The minister said a MyKad is the only requirement, and the government wants to avoid lengthy registration. The pass costs RM50 for 30 days of unlimited KTM Komuter rides.
Does MyKomuter50 make homes near KTM stations a better buy?
It lowers the cost of commuting from homes within walking distance of a Komuter station, which can support rental demand. But train frequency, reliability, the full journey to work and the home’s own price still matter more than the fare.
